Five Nine
This was a Japan-based magazine published in Japanese and
mainly distributed in Japan. The magazine's name was derived from the international
amateur radio R-S-T system, used to report the quality of received signals,
with 59 indicating the highest level of signal readability and signal strength.
The magazine was published on a monthly basis in Tokyo, covering the topics of
radio contesting and D-Xing in amateur radio. Moreover, the magazine organized,
adjudicated, and published the results of an annual international radio
competition, the Japan International DX Contest, which focused on encouraging
communications between amateur radio stations in Japan with other amateur radio
stations around the world. The magazine was first published in 1986 by editor-in-chief
Jaiely and ceased publication in September 2014. As stated by their main
website, the main contents of the magazine were band columns that conveyed the
state of each band, DX contest information, technical information, operation
notes of DX-pedition, special articles on antennas and radio wave propagation,
and rigs, monthly DX reports, and other JARL movements. The reason for the suspension
of the magazine’s publications was not clearly stated.
