Practical Wireless
The magazine was founded as a supplement to Hobbies magazine in 1932. The founder, F.J. Camm was a member of George Newnes Publishers that published the magazine. It moved from a supplement to an independent weekly magazine in that year, then its publishing reduced to monthly issues in 1940 due to wartime paper shortages. Camm was its editor until his death in 1959: leaving it to be affectionately referred to as one of "Camm's comics." Practical Wireless also had a supplement, Practical Television, for a short while before the war which became a separate publication in 1950.
The magazine mainly covered topics
such as constructing radio circuits, electronics, instruments, and audio, and Clive
Sinclai, a freelance contributor who wrote articles for Practical Wireless
since his school days, advertised products for his company Sinclair Radionics
extensively in the magazine.
Practical Wireless became dedicated
entirely to amateur radio from the November 1980 issue.
The retirement of previous owners
Roger Hall and Steve Hunt saw Practical Wireless and sister magazine Radio User
sold to Warners Group Publications in 2017, a Lincolnshire-based publishing
company specializing in producing hobby-related magazines, websites, and
events.
The magazine was written in English
and based in the United Kingdom.
