NOAA Weather Radio

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is a service provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States government. It is a network of radio stations that broadcast continuous weather information, including forecasts, warnings, and other emergency information, 24 hours a day. The information is transmitted on one of seven VHF frequencies between 162.400 MHz and 162.550 MHz. The service is intended for use by the public, particularly in areas that are at high risk for severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flash floods. The service can be accessed with a special radio receiver or through a smartphone app.

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) Equipment

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) equipment is a specialized radio receiver that is designed to receive the VHF frequencies used by the NWR network. These radios can be portable, handheld devices or they can be fixed, table-top, or in-car units. Some newer weather radios come with built-in alarms and even display weather alert radios.

The radios can be powered by batteries, AC adapters, or a car cigarette lighter, and some radios have built-in solar panels for charging the batteries during power outages.

Many modern weather radios also have a feature called Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) which allows users to program the radio to only receive alerts for specific counties or geographical areas. This feature is useful for people who live near a county line and only want to receive alerts for their county.

In addition, some radios come with a feature called "All Hazards" which allows the user to receive alerts for all types of hazards including civil emergencies, nuclear power plant warnings, and child abduction emergencies (Amber Alerts).

In summary, NOAA Weather Radio equipment is a specialized radio receiver designed to receive the VHF frequencies used by the NWR network. It can be portable, handheld or fixed, table-top or in-car unit, and come with features such as Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME), All Hazards, alarms, and display of weather alerts.
