South African Radio League (SARL)
Radio ZS is a magazine published by the South African Radio League (SARL), formerly known as the South African Radio Relay League (SARRL), which is the society that represents South Africa in the International Amateur Radio Union.
SARL is a non-profit organization
representing amateur radio enthusiasts in South Africa and advocates on behalf
of its membership and all licensed amateur radio operators in the country to
the South African government. The advocation includes activities such as promotion of deregulation and simplification of the amateur radio service, and
expansion of the number of amateur radio operators in Southern Africa, publication
and promotion of the role of amateur radio in society, and promotion of the use
of amateur radio in schools as an entry point into the fields of science and
technology.
Radio ZS is based in Bloemfontein and is currently published electronically on a monthly basis. The magazine’s
name is derived from the call sign system where most South African operators
are assigned the ZS by the International Telecommunications Union. The editor
of the magazine is Dennis Green.
Before Radio ZS, SARL published a
printed magazine, QTC, in 1928 based in Durban succeeding a fortnight new sheet
called F.O in 1927. SARL had no regular publications before the news sheet when
it was founded in 1925.
Radio ZS aligns with the purpose of
SARL as it is a forum for South African Radio League members to share their
amateur radio experiments, experiences, opinions, and news. It is also used for
advertisement at a fee.
